Specialist removal and replacement of a high-level rooflight in London’s East India Dock

Let there be light! A stunning atrium rooflight replacement.

In the heart of East India Dock, this rooflight required the full removal of the existing structure and replacement with a new one. A demanding location, ten storeys up, with a light well to the ground floor meant scaffolding was a key element to the success of this project.

All part of the plan

The new atrium rooflight beautifully complemented this fantastic refurbishment of a group of buildings located in East India Dock. With stylish interiors and landscaping, and views of the O2 and the River Thames, this was a high-profile and challenging project.

  • Matching the existing the new rooflight was designed using Schueco FW 60+  curtain wall glazed with solar-control, toughened and laminated safety glass
  • The design included elements of curved (on plan) glazing, remediation of the existing steel structure and replacement of external flashings and EPDMs.

Dot the i’s

  • Instructing building control, and liaison with the client’s façade consultant for inspection visits.

Weathertight access design

In order to remove and replace the existing roof, Osprey teamed up with Access Solutions to provide an impressive protective temporary access. A Leyher system roof was designed and installed to create a temporary watertight cover.

  • With a large atrium to span a complex bird cage crash deck was engineered and installed.
  • Safe working practices were paramount working over the 10 storey void
  • Large, managed crane lifts were used to load the materials to the rooftop location.
